Variation theory in mathematics is a new approach of delivering maths lessons directing pupils attention on the mathematical concepts by changing (varying) only one element in a set of questions. For example if, as teachers, we want that rules of operating with negatives to be embedded by students, we can challenge them to think by offering a set of questions with the same numbers, the only thing that will change being the sign in front of that number. That will start the learning process with reflecting above the concept followed by the expectation of the solving, checking the answers leading to an increased ability of explanation of the entire solving process.

Another aspect of the Variation Theory is to provide students with multiple methods to solve the same question. That will involve multiple representation of the same concept that will enable students to approach a question various way.

We also can try to use the same method for a set of questions from different topics delivered in the classroom. For example for directly proportional amounts (equivalent fractions, percentage, ratio, converting units, best buy questions) we can use The Rule of Three as a single representation and method of solving.

This can lead to significant moments of revelation (just clicked) compelling students to think more deeply about the processes involved. instead of just cruising through a sequence of questions on autopilot.

As a teacher and a tutor I am finding the Variation Theory a better approach of delivering mathematical concepts, and I will start to share with you many ways of using it in the classroom and not just.
